The California Music Industry Summit (CMIS) has created a Scholarship Program for Northern California Middle & High School Students (ages 14 - 18) and Emerging Artist/Bands (18+), who have expressed an interest in the music industry and would like to attend out summit; but due to economic challenges are unable to do so.

About the Scholarship Program
The CMIS Scholarship Program will mainly target Northern California Youth and Artist/Bands—locally and abroad—who are unable to afford the summit and travel due to significant financial hardships. The intention for the program is to support these individuals’ goals of being a success in the entertainment industry. In addition, the program offers opportunities and exposure to professionals in the industry who can provide genuine feedback and guidance on their career aspirations.
    • The Scholarship Application Period will run from January 1, 2014 to May 16, 2014 at 11:59 p.m./PST
    • All winners will be featured in the CMIS 2014 Program 
    • All applicants must meet strict eligibility guidelines or risk disqualifications 
    • Award Letters to be sent by May 30, 2014

Scholarship Eligibility
    • Complete Online Application - (one eligibility submission, per person)
    • Must attend an accredited Northern California High School 
    • Submit a valid High School ID
    • Submit one (1) of the following: State ID Card, School Registration Card or Birth Certificate with DOB
    • Submit a current Report Card with a 2.8+
    • Submit one (1) Letter of Recommendation from a Teacher or Principal 
    • Submit a 1 page essay stating Financial Need and Why Do You Think “Artists and Entertainment Professionals need to be Empowered for Excellence in 2014!”
    • Must submit a CMIS Summit Permission Slip from Parents (**This will be emailed to Parents)
    • Submit 1 to 2 Head Shots or Professional Pictures (high resolutions 300dpi)
    • **ONLY PDFs will be accepted. NO WORD documents.
    • ***DEADLINE: APPLICATION & ALL MATERIALS MUST BE RECEIVED ON OR BEFORE APRIL 14, 2014 by 11:59 P.M. PST

B. EMERGING ARTIST/BANDS (18+)

    • Complete Online Application - (one eligibility submission, per artist or band)
    • Must submit valid Driver’s License or State ID/per person
    • If a Band: Must Submit Names of all Band Members
    • Must be signed with a performance rights organization (i.e. ASCAP, SESAC, BMI)
    • Must submit two (2) Original Songs via MP3 
    • Must submit (1) Video via YouTube, Vevo, etc. 
    • Submit one (1) Letter of Recommendation from a Professional Individuals (NO relatives)
    • Submit a 1 page essay on Why Do You Think “Artists and Entertainment Professionals need to be Empowered for Excellence in 2014!”
    • Submit 1 to 2 Head Shots or Professional Pictures (high resolutions 300dpi)
    • *ONLY PDFs will be accepted. NO WORD documents.
    • **Covers and copyrighted songs will be disqualified
    • ***Please note you may be chosen to perform during the Artist Showcase
    • ****DEADLINE: APPLICATION & ALL MATERIALS MUST BE RECEIVED ON OR BEFORE APRIL 14, 2014 by 11:59 P.M. PST

Scholarship Criteria

  • Submission Period: Opens: January 1, 2014 at 12:00 a.m./PST | Ends: May 16, 2014 at 11:59 p.m./PST
  • Selection Process: Presentation of Materials, Letters, Recommendations, and Essays will be scored
  • Automatic Disqualification: 
    • (1) Incomplete applications are automatically disqualified 
    • (2) Paying for the Summit and then Submitting for a Scholarship, 
    • (3) Giving false information, etc.


Award Process

  • (30) Award Letters will be sent on May 30, 2014
  • Recipients will be placed in CMIS 2014 Program
  • All will be able to attend CMIS 2014 Summit & Artist Showcases

      • CMIS Scholarship Sponsor ($30,000)
    2. Individual Scholarship Program Sponsorship Opportunity
      • CA Middle/High School Student Sponsor ($35.00/per student)
      • Emerging Artist Sponsor ($199.00/per person)
      • Emerging Band Sponsor ($597.00/Groups of 3+)

Any sponsorship or donation you can give will help us to empower and inspire each student, emerging artist or band to keep moving forward with their art and entertainment aspirations, no matter the challenges they face. For this specific purpose, “51OAKLAND,” a charitable non-profit 501(c)(3) whose mission “is to ensure that all Oakland public school students have equal access to Art and Music Education” has chosen to become a FISCAL SPONSOR on behalf of CMIS. This additional opportunity allows for monetary and in-kind sponsorship support to be tax deductible.
